Navigating Constraints and
Balancing Elements
One of the main challenges was balancing the gallery’s historical significance with the need for a fresh, student-driven perspective. The space had to remain functional for admissions events while also serving as an exhibition that highlights Drexel’s core values—art, science, and industry. Additionally, an existing deep terra-cotta red, which covered the DeWalt walls and could not be altered, posed a design constraint that required careful color coordination. Designing within these limitations demanded a thoughtful typographic hierarchy, legibility in varying lighting conditions, and cohesive branding that connected archival materials, scientific artifacts, and modern art. The integration of the In the Garden mural into the spatial design without overpowering other elements also required strategic visual organization.

A Thoughtfully Curated Visual Identity
The design approach centered on accessibility, clarity, and cohesion. The color palette was carefully chosen to complement the In the Garden mural’s natural tones while balancing the unavoidable presence of the deep terra-cotta red from the DeWalt walls. This ensured a harmonious visual experience that did not feel disjointed. The typography and layout were designed to guide visitors intuitively through the space, ensuring a seamless flow of information. Student-written labels were carefully formatted to maintain consistency while allowing individual voices to stand out. The wayfinding system complemented the gallery’s new arrangement, reinforcing the themes of exploration and discovery. By harmonizing Drexel’s institutional legacy with contemporary student narratives, Drexel Reframed offers an immersive and educational experience that reflects the University’s evolving identity.
