Moon rising, ritual reviving. To keep ceremony in the daily cup, drawing on Ethiopian coffee culture and traditional tea and chai service, and on the women who carry those traditions forward.

A system built on the moon and the star, and on two marks instead of one: Arabic calligraphy for the ceremony, a rounded bubble wordmark for the party. Five colours, one pattern, and a menu format that can change weekly without a reprint. An identity made to be poured from, not framed.

Exploration ran in two directions at once. One was the landscape: current Arabic cafés, how they are naming themselves, what the category already looks like and where it repeats itself. The other was conversation. Long sessions with the owners, listening to their own stories about coffee and the rituals built around it, and their memories of drink service at home, at family gatherings and through Ramadan. The same thing surfaced every time: the subject was never really the drink. It was gathering, and having something good in your hands long enough for the conversation to open up. That became the brief.

Colour + Type

Five colours, all named for what they come from: charred coffee, dates, brewed tea, cream, chai. CoFo Raffine carries the display voice in Medium and Bold, mixed within a single line so drink names read as compositions rather than lists. Body type is deliberately still open; mono handles labels and wayfinding in the meantime.

The Vision:
A Dynamic and Immersive Brand Identity

Two logos for two different moments. The classic mark is built on Arabic calligraphy, developed with the client through multiple rounds to confirm accuracy and cultural resonance; it carries the ceremony at the core of the brand and appears on hot drinks, signage, anything tied to tradition. The modern mark is a rounded bubble wordmark, playful and loud, built for weddings, social events and pop ups. It runs on cold cups and merchandise.

A menu that keeps moving

Drinks rotate often and are only available for short windows, so a printed menu was never practical. The answer was a glass A-frame display: the team swaps the drink list per event, still in brand, without reprinting anything. Brown Sugar Latte, Chai Karak, Salted Caramel Latte, rotating seasonally.

Around the shop

The awning, the counter banner and the cap divide the two marks by temperature and tone: calligraphy where the ritual is, bubble wordmark where the crowd is. The pattern does the rest of the work, scaling from a scalloped awning valance down to a stitched crest.

In the world: Café Layl × The Pink Gym

In July the identity left the counter for a Matcha and Pilates pop up, bringing the drink menu into a movement space. Strawberry matcha, layered pink and green, was the signature pour, and the event card proved the system could go fully chaï pink and still read as Layl.
